Here is an interesting article that puts a new dimension on the original energy currency of the body. It has long been taught that ATP is the energy currency of cells however there is speculations that millions of years ago there was another source of this energy; meteorites.
According to the article ‘Meteorites could have been source of life’s batteries’ when these rocks crashed on planet Earth they supplied the first accessible storage molecule for early life forms, phosphorus; since at that time organisms would not have had the necessary mechanisms to utilise ATP. Terry Kee states that pyrophosphite which contains phosphorus, oxygen and hydrogen could have been the first energy storage molecule because of its chemical similarities with ATP but with no need for enzymes because of its high reactivity.
To prove this theory Terry and colleagues studied a phosphorus rich meteorite in a water environment similar to primordial earth. The results illustrated formation of phosphites and its easy transformation into pyrophosphite. Other studies reinforced Terry’s discovery and showed that early earth was indeed rich in phosphite. On the other hand William Martin argues that modern organisms do not use phosphites but phosphates as their energy store. This controversy has resulted in other scientist leaning on pyrophoshate as the energy store but with reservations since phosphates is too reactive to last long on earth while others discount either propositions. Moreover, Terry Kee suggests that pyrophoshosphite could be the precursor molecule to pyrophosphate.
